Texas Lawyers for Children is a program of the Child Protection Connection, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting abused children from further harm.

TLC's Mission

TLC's mission is to improve case outcomes for abused and neglected children by enhancing the quality of legal services they receive. The most important decisions about an abused or neglected child's future are made in court. TLC exists to help ensure that those decisions protect children and preserve families when safe.

The Current System

At present, Texas counties are usually responsible for funding the child abuse and neglect cases which determine the "best interest of the child." Consequently, the court-appointed attorneys who represent the children are paid little in fees, if any, and have little or no budget for time or expenses spent in vital case preparation, including such things as research, analysis, conferring with other professionals to arise a complex number of legal issues that may arise.

The Unique Value of TLC

Because judges and attorneys serve vulnerable children throughout Texas each year, solving this gap in resources carries incredible impact, potentially affecting the lives of tens of thousands of children each year. Through its innovative Online Center and a network of over 3,000 judges and attorneys throughout Texas, TLC provides these professionals with access to legal, medical, and psychological information at one easy-to-use site. Thus research, diligently done once, becomes available to legal professionals across Texas, who will no longer each have to "reinvent the wheel" individually. Also, TLC's communication tools enable registered judges and attorneys to question their peers on specific issues and share information, including analysis, case strategies, and knowledge about expert witnesses. Finally, TLC provides up-to-date training on issues that are affecting abused children throughout Texas. For example, in one training program, TLC was able to train over 1,000 judges and attorneys who estimate that they impact the lives of 80,000 Texas children. Click here to view testimonials.

How You Can Help

Abused and neglected children deserve to have the highest quality legal services available. With your help, TLC can continue to offer new resources to judges and attorneys that will affect children across Texas. By providing judges and attorneys with access to this valuable information, TLC can help ensure that the legal system which is supposed to protect abused and neglected children does not cause them further harm.

You may not be able to help every child in foster care, but with a donation to TLC, you can come close to making an impact in each of their case and life outcomes.
